What Matters Most: A Mid-Year Values Check

It’s August, and we have officially entered the 2nd half of the year. Mid-year is a wonderful opportunity to look at the first half of the year and ask: Am I living intentionally, or have I simply been responding to everything and everyone around me? In my Harmonize Your Life Intentional Self-Care Program, we are taking time to pause, reflect, and honestly assess how we are doing, not just how much we have accomplished in this first half of the year.

One of the most important parts of that check-up is revisiting our values. Values are the things we have determined matter most to us, faith, family, health, relationships, peace, joy, integrity, purpose, freedom, growth, service, or whatever we hold close. They become a compass that helps us decide where our time, energy, attention, and resources belong.

But sometimes there is a disconnect between what we say we value and how we are living. We say we value our health, but our schedules leave little room for rest, movement, or nourishment. We say we value family, but the people we love receive whatever energy is left over. We say we value peace, but we continue saying yes to commitments that disrupt our peace. We say we value joy, but we keep postponing the things that bring joy into our lives.

That is why checking our values is an act of intentional self-care. Intentional self-care is not simply about adding another activity to our schedules. It is about paying attention to how we are living and making choices that are consistent with our values.

When we know our values, they help us determine what deserves a yes, what requires a no, what needs a boundary, and what may need to change altogether. The Mid-Year Check-Up gives us permission to notice where we may have drifted and gently realign. The goal isn't perfection. The goal is alignment.

As you reflect on the first half of the year, ask yourself:

·      What are my five most important values in this season?

·      Where does my current life reflect those values?

·      Where is there a gap between what I value and how I am spending my time and energy?

·      What is one adjustment I can make during the second half of the year to bring my life back into alignment?

Remember, living intentionally doesn't mean doing everything. It means becoming increasingly clear about what matters most and having the courage to live according to our values. Because harmony is living consistently with our values and making room for what matters most.
