4th Quarter Breaks
David Kundtz in his book Stopping: How to Be Still When You Have to Keep Going states people are more likely to take weekend getaways than weeklong vacations. As we enter the 4th quarter of the year, short getaways take on a deeper value than simple leisure. They are intentional pauses that allow us to reset before the year closes. The pace of fall often brings with it, deadlines, holiday planning, and a natural push to “finish strong” in preparation for a new year. Without what I call, 4th quarter breaks, we risk running on empty during a season that may require our best energy.
These short breaks, weekend getaways or trips provide us an opportunity to disconnect from our regular routines and enjoy moments of rest and repose much like the one my husband I just experienced in St. Maarten. St. Maarten is known as the jewel of the Caribbean. It’s half Dutch, half French culture is quite captivating with turquoise waters, white-sand beaches, music, foods, and warm climate, beautiful sunrises and sunsets. We took 3 days to disconnect from our work, rest, sleep, laugh, engaged in refreshing activities such as beach walks, morning meditations, Caribbean meals, and the 60th Birthday Celebration of a dear friend.
How healing and therapeutic it was to be in a place where time slowed down. Walking on the beach with the waves splashing over my feet, I found myself releasing the tension I didn’t even realize I was carrying. This short time away was not just a trip, it was a reset. It was an investment in clarity, focus, renewal and well-being. I was reminded of the value of pausing, being fully present with myself, my husband, my God, friends and the sights and sounds of nature.
It’s October 1st. If you’re like us, the pace of life, ministry, business and work is quickening in this 4th quarter of the year. St. Maarten renewed our spirits and sent us home with joyful hearts and deeper gratitude, ready to carry a sense of peace into the final stretch of the year. Therefore, I encourage you to take a break. Give yourself permission to pause.
A brief getaway may be exactly what you need to ground yourself, restore your joy, and finish this year not just busy, but anchored in harmony, peace, refreshed in purpose, and ready to step into what’s next. A weekend away, a simple change of scenery, a walk by the ocean, a mountain cabin, or a staycation in your own city can shift your perspective and help you finish the year grounded, grateful, and strong. These sacred pauses allow your body to rest, your mind to reset, and your spirit to reconnect with what matters, and return with fresh eyes and renewed motivation.
Don’t allow this year to end without gifting yourself a break. Book the trip, purchase the ticket, disconnect and enjoy a 4th quarter break!
